CAIRNGORM HITS WINTER TARGET FOR 2008
It was big smiles all round at CairnGorm Mountain when Jim Stewart and his son Callum (10) from Arbroath bought their Day Tickets earlier today (Friday 11th) for that meant that Scotland’s leading ski resort, now a year-round visitor attraction, had achieved its target of 51,000 skier days for the winter season.

GOOD SNOW WELCOMES ARMY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Around 60 members of the Territorial Army from all over the UK are currently enjoying the very good snow conditions that are on offer at CairnGorm Mountain for this year’s British Army Skiing Championships being held from 3rd to 9th March. With fresh snow forecast for later in the week, along with some sunshine, conditions are likely to get even better as the week-long event reaches its climax when a further 30 competitors are expected to be involved in the Slalom and Giant Slalom races.

At the end of week in which yet another consumer research agency sounded the death knell of Scottish skiing, staff at CairnGorm Mountain could afford a wry smile. For, with visitors flocking to the slopes in their thousands during last week’s half-term school holidays, this was certainly a clear-cut case of “reports of my death are grossly exaggerated”.

Spending the night in a snow hole in the Cairngorms is a popular activity - whether as part of a Winter Mountain Leader Course or just for pleasure. Like all activities in the hills, if only a few folk are doing it then it’s not a problem but with increasing numbers now enjoying the Scottish winter hills, snow hole sites are sadly becoming environmental disaster areas. When the snow melts in the summer months at the popular sites of Ciste Mhearad and Coire Domhain, our human impact is all too apparent…….
