The Cairngorms form the largest area of high ground in the UK, and are home to 5 of the UK's 6 highest peaks. The arctic-alpine climate that dominates this mountain range has created a unique environment which is internationally valued for its landscape quality, rare habitats, scientific interest and recreational activities. The visitor facilities at CairnGorm Mountain have been designed to improve management of this natural asset, and visitor understanding of its value and significance.
The Ptarmigan Interpretive Centre at 3600 feet includes the Mountain Exhibition, where visitors of all ages can learn about the geology, biology, climate and history of this fantastic environment. The Ptarmigan is accessed via the CairnGorm Mountain Railway, which carries visitors in safety and comfort from the Base Station. Over the summer months, each carriage carries a maximum of 60 passengers and the journey takes around 8 minutes.
